Introduction

Introduction

The purpose of this volume is to explore the methods by which the authors judge the adequacy of long-term management of glaucoma. The ultimate purpose is to minimize the symptomatic and disabling consequences of having the disease (including, but not limited to, impairment of ability to see adequately for the visual tasks a the person's lifestyle requires). For this, we need measures of the present state of the individual's eyes, formulas for predicting the natural course of the condition in an individual patient, knowledge of the effect of various management strategies on the future course, methods to monitor the change in an individual's clinical state, and criteria for what constitutes a good or bad future course and ultimate outcome.
